Going on safari is on most people’s lists of things to do before they die. The experience of being at one with such extremes of nature, dangerous animals and wild plains, is enough to make even the most introvert people feel alive. Though apart from the most obvious places, where else in Africa can you go to see other fantastic examples of nature and wildlife in its natural habitat? Well that is what this article is all about, so if you are thinking of making the trip of a lifetime, take note of the following places and make it a holiday you will never forget.

Kenya – At around 600 square miles, the Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya is certainly not the biggest game reserve in Africa, but it is still one of the most popular. It is possible to see the big 5 (lions, elephants, rhinoceros, leopards and buffalos) mammals in their natural habitat and provides one of the best safari experiences possible. Strict vehicle regulations and continuous ranger patrols means that the wildlife and habitat are preserved better than many of the other reserves in Africa.

Uganda – If you want to go a little off the beaten track and experience something that is simply awe-inspiring, visit the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. The park is a World Heritage Site and contains one of Africa’s richest and most diverse ecosystems providing habitat for (amongst many other species) half of the world’s population of endangered mountain gorillas.

Zambia – Another great safari destination is the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. Zambia is home to a huge array of natural wonders including the Victoria Falls, the largest waterfall in the world which is almost a mile wide. The South Luangwa National Park is one of 3 national parks in the Luangwa River basin and is world renowned for the wildlife it supports, including huge elephant and buffalo herds, giraffe, crocodiles and hippopotamuses.

South Africa – One of the largest and probably the best maintained national park in Africa is the Kruger National Park in South Africa. The Kruger National Park is over 17,000 square miles in size, making it one of the largest parks in the world and can boast more species of mammal than any other reserve in Africa at 147 species. It is possible to see all the big 5 mammals in their natural habitats here.
