Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands is a firm favorite with holidaymakers who are seeking a bit of sunshine, sand and sea. However, it is less well known for it’s green and leafy mountainous area to the north of the island. Not just the destination for a lazy beach holiday in the sun, Gran Canaria is also gaining a reputation for being the perfect destination for an active holiday of water sports or for hiking. And if that’s not enough there is plenty to offer in terms of culture in Gran Canaria, with lots of museums, galleries, architecture and churches for you to discover and explore.

Holiday Resorts – Although it’s the obvious reason, Gran Canaria remains a firm favourite with holidaymakers because of its beaches. If you like nothing more than lazing on the beach or by the pool in the sun then Gran Canaria makes for a great sunny getaway. The nightlife is lively here so if you like to party all night when you are on holiday then you will not be disappointed.

Water Sports – Also on offer at the various beach resorts are endless opportunities for water sports. The area has a good reputation for its water sports and because it is the breeziest of the Canary Islands it is a great place for those who enjoy sailing or windsurfing. Other water-based activities include fishing excursions, scuba diving, surfing and canoeing and kayaking.

Camel Safaris – A camel safari is the perfect way to see the deserts of Gran Canaria. A camel safari across the Maspalomas dunes will give you the opportunity to see some stunning scenery and have a completely unique experience.

Hiking and Walking – Not just a beach resort, Gran Canaria has lots to offer in terms of walking and hiking in the mountainous north. The area is becoming increasingly popular with hikers and those who love nature. There are over 30 protected areas so expect some fabulous scenery and there are lots of paths and trails to follow although it’s important to be prepared or to use a guide.

Museums and Galleries – Gran Canaria’s main museum is the Museo Canario where you can view some mummies and the largest collection of Cro-Magnon skulls you’ll find anywhere. This is a great place to visit to find out about the local history. There is also a technology museum called the Museo Elder de la Ciencia y la Tecnología that has interesting displays many of which are suitable for children as they are hands on. Art lovers can head to the Castillo de la Luz that houses art exhibitions in a 16th Century castle and the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno which is the museum for modern art in Las Palmas.
